Ruth Bailey was an assistant teacher in art at Black Mountain College from September 1936 to February 1938.

Before BMC, she graduated from Bennington College. While at BMC, she also taught art at a public school in Black Mountain.

In a recommendation letter from Josef Albers, written on June 1, 1938, it was shared "during this time she participated in the following courses: Drawing 1 (for beginners), Drawing II (for. advanced students), Color II (painting), Werklehre (practical design) with me. She participated in making masks for Stage Studies under Mr Xanti Schawinsky. Furthermore, she continued Weaving (practice and theory) with Mrs Anni Albers, in which she showed great talent. As a teacher she started several art classes in the public school of Black Mountain and conducted them with good results. Miss Bailey is a very talented artist. She has a cultivated taste and a particularly good feeling for color and material. She has a free and natural approach toward artists form as well as an inventive mind for constructive and combinative tasks. This enables her to teach drawing, water-color painting, design. As a person, Miss Bailey is not only well educated but has particular charm and distinct tact, which made her a beloved member of our College community."
