Kendall Boice Cox was born in Chicago, Illinois to lawyer Arthur Malcolm Cox, Sr. and Mary Edna Boice Cox. He attended North Shore Country Day School from 1930-1943. After graduation, Cox spent two-and-a-half years in the Army.

He attended Black Mountain College on the GI Bill for the 1946 spring and fall quarters and for the 1946 Summer Art Institute. While a student, he also participated in the Recreation Committee.

After leaving Black Mountain College he transferred to Oberlin College (B.A.). He received his M.A. (1953) and Ph.D. (1963) in philosophy from the University of Michigan. He taught philosophy at the University of Michigan-Flint.

Spring semester1945-46: Drawing (Albers), Problems of Philosophy III (Dehn), Modern Novel (Merrick), Contemporary Society (Levi), Work Program.

Summer semester 1946: Basic Design, Woodworking. No instructors listed.
