John was one of the founding students that came from Rollins College in 1933. He completed three years of study at Rollins, then finished his degree at Black Mountain. His thesis was a mixture of Economics, Literature, Philosophy, and History, in the subject of "England in the 19th Century."
When requesting to transfer to George Washington University, Theodore Dreier sent his transcripts for BMC with the note "honorable discharge," which hints that he didn't complete the standard examination requirements to graduate. He has records showing his enrollment from the fall of 1933 to the spring of 1935, but no bulletins share any activities while at the college.
