Frederick Mangold was at the college from fall of 1934 to summer of 1943 in a variety of positions, including Faculty of romance languages, Secretary, Registrar, and serving on the Board of Fellows.

Frederick received his BA from Princeton in 1929. After teaching at Louisiana Stale University and the Colorado School of Mines, he attended the University of Wisconsin, where he completed his PhD in Spanish Language and Civilization. He then came to Black Mountain College where he stayed until 1942, when he entered government service and served in the Foreign Service Reserve in Mexico City and in the Foreign Service at Washington and in Paris.

In 1954, he joined the American Council on Education in Washington as a member of and subsequently director of its Committee on Foreign Leaders and Specialists.

The Western Regional Archives hold a collection of papers from Frederick's time at BMC, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Rogers Mangold Papers.
