Felix Thomas Krowinski, Sr., a native of Niagara Falls, New York, graduated from the Buffalo State Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then attended Black Mountain College for the 1947-1948 regular term and the 1948 summer session.

Following Black Mountain College, he resumed his nursing career, working as a psychiatric nurse at Bellevue Hospital in New York. He also worked as a nurse in Sumatra and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Montrose, New York. He married Josephine St. Angelo and they had a son. While at Black Mountain College, he photographed the campus, landscapes, students, and faculty, as well as events.

Mary Harris has long been regarded as one of the most prominent scholars on Black Mountain College. Her book, "The Arts at Black Mountain College" (1987), is one of the most influential publications on the history of BMC.
