BIRTH
Doris came to Black Mountain for the summer session of 1947 to study voice and piano. She and her husband lived in Asheville, so they did not stay on campus during the session, nor did they intend to stay beyond the summer session. She also noted in her application that she knew Carol Brice, who performed at the college during a music institute summer.
There is one note from her piano course, by Erwin Bodky, “Doris Miller is very musical and intelligent. Yet she had not had any previous experience of how to work methodically and met considerable difficulties in adjusting herself to make good (word unreadable)” She shared in her application to the session that she was teaching at Pichlee School as a music teacher in Littleton, NC. Doris wrote a letter to the college on June 30, 1947 stating that Quentin would no longer be able to attend but thanked the college for allowing her to stay.
