Barbara Ann Beatty was a student in the fall of 1935 to the spring of 1939. She shared that she wanted to focus on psychology for her studies, but her student file is full of short stories and literature reviews. While studying at the college, Barbara also worked as a tutor. She married fellow BMC student, Duncan Dwight and wrote a few times to the college bulletin to update on where they moved to.

2017.40.252 March 1939 bulletin, “Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House,” the major spring production of the drama department, was given on the College stage Saturday evening, February 18. The cast included Hope Stephens, Duncan Dwight, Bela Martin, Barbara Beatty, Edward Jamieson, Sue Spayth, and Kathryn Sieck. Scenery design and stage direction were under the supervision of George Hendrickson.”
2017.40.130 October 1943 bulletin, “Barbara Beatty Dwight writes from Texas: “Dune has been in the Air Corps since last April, and I have been with him since May- though I guess it would be more accurate if I said I have been in Texas since May and occasionally catch a glimpse of him. After the usual inexplicable delay he was sent to Navigation School; and, if nothing goes wrong, he should graduate a week or so before Christmas….. I have become a student again. There is a State Teachers College here and I am taking Spanish. This is a very small town, a bit larger than Black Mountain perhaps, but still small; so with Spanish and Red Cross work I keep busy… Another girl and I hoped to get jobs at the Field, but they wont’s hire cadets’ wives….””
2017.40.148 March 1944 bulletin, “Barbara Beatty Dwight writes from Gulfport, Mississippi: “Friday morning Emil Willimotz and Tommy Wontworth appeared…We tried to get hold of Cynthia Carr, but she had a long watch… so the four of us had a small and short reunion- it was fun” (Cynthia Woston)…”We are on the verge of moving again- the school here is being closed at the end of this month. We have no idea what will happen to Dune- he may be sent to another school to finish his training, or he might be sent over.””
2017.40.171 September 1944 bulletin, “Barbara Beatty Dwight writes from Arlington, Virginia: “Dunc is in Missouri- a spot called Malden- working on planes. He seems to be very busy and certainly enjoying it more than he enjoyed just sitting around doing nothing. He seems to have had more than his share of that. No one knows how long he will stay there or anything like that. I wish he were closer- I haven’t seen him since June….Russ and I had a fine visit for a week in August. She came down for part of her vacation….I just heard from Peggy Dwight that the Westons are in New York now…””
