Andrew “Andy” Oates was raised in Graniteville, Rhode Island. He served in the Pacific Theater in the Navy during World War II and later graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design.

He was Black Mountain College’s first graduate in photography in May 1951. His examiner was Edward Steichen. Oates took classes under Hazel Archer, who in 1949-50 produced with her students a photographic publicity “viewbook” and a photography journal, Five Photographers, which was printed and bound at the college.

The journal, which appeared only once, contained statements and individually printed photographs by Oates and other students. He also studied weaving with Anni Albers, Trude Guermonprez, Marli Ehrmann, and Ellen Siegel. He worked in both photography and weaving and was the co-founder of Nantucket Looms.

His photographs are in the permanent collection of the Artists Association of Nantucket.
