William Reed was a student from 1936 to 1940. He was also listed as an apprentice teacher for 1941 Spring, 1941 Fall, and 1946 Summer Session.

For his graduate examinations he displayed oil paintings, drawings, textiles, tapestries, and compositions. He transferred to BMC from Harvard and graduated in 1940 with Marcel Breuer as his examiner. In the summer of 1939, he joined Anni and Josef Albers on their sabbatical trip to Mexico.

He was a close friend of the Alberses and at times in residence. In the fall of 1942 when a resident, he designed and constructed the Quiet House in memory of Mark Dreier, who was killed in an accident at the college. In 1941 he collaborated with Anni Albers on the design of Hardware Jewelry. In the summer of 1946 he was assistant to Albers in the color class.

After the war he attended the Harvard School of Design.
